What's up? I'm epically hungover after the staff Christmas party, which was a whole bunch of fun. My good friend Mariana drew my name for secret santa and got me a Gabor Mate book about ADHD, which was a hilarious burn and also a very nice present! I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm light on reading material this week, but I did finally finish my driving playlist, so I'll link to that.
Short & Sweet
Captain Awkward is our advice columnist this week! I credit her with my learning how to be an actual person - I had trouble with social skills and boundaries when I was younger, and discovering her blog when I was 19 was a total lifesaver.
I am a transwoman and I am not coming out: “A person’s privilege is very often an explanation of why their beliefs are warped, if indeed their beliefs are warped, which they usually are in some way. But—it’s not proof of shitty beliefs. Those tend to out themselves by…being shitty. If a person is telling this cis girl she is taking for granted a privilege that trans girls don’t have, why is it this cis girl’s instinct to hunt for that person’s identity to see if she can discredit them and not have to think about their point? Don’t answer that. We already know.”
Under the Weather: “The emergent understanding of the psychological harm caused by climate change is at the root of a new field known as ecopsychology. According to one of its founders, historian Theodore Roszak, the purpose of the discipline is to define “‘sanity’ as if the whole world mattered.” Ecopsychologists view the Cartesian separation of mind and body—an outlook taken for granted in mainstream medicine—as antiquated and harmful, and argue that it can lead to people viewing themselves as separate from the planet they live on.”
Listen Up!
The driving playlist, as promised! I've also been jamming out to a lot of stoner metal this week, getting back into Sleep after seeing them live at Deathfest in Montreal.
Get thee to the library!
I've been only snacking on books this week, since I've had a busy time with work and lots of little errands to run. I finished up with Sheila Heti's Motherhood just before I had to return it to the library, but I didn't enjoy it as much as her previous book, How Should A Person Be? So I'm going to reccomend you read that one instead!
I'm also re-listening to the audiobook of RedMars by Kim Stanley Robinson, which is a trilogy I revisit annually. It's a foundational text for me, which maybe sounds weird to say about a science fiction book, but the hopeful portrayal of socialism in action is something I return to over and over. With every reading, I get something new.
Extremely Scorpio Self-Burn
Honestly, his dishonorable military record is the least shitty thing about him! Why am I like this?! He's not even hot.
No points for guessing which ex I'm talking about in this deep cut! What a joker.
So what did you get up to this week? Any poetry to share? What books from your teenagehood are evergreen? Which of YOUR exes aren't even hot?
